Trichoscopy is a modern method to examine the scalp and hair. Trichoscopy is a diagnostic method, based on the technique of videodermoscopy, an examination performed by using a camera. Trichoscopy examines hair stems, hair follicle outlets and surrounding skin. The method allows the assessment of these structures, without having to collect hair (the test is completely non-invasive).

When examine with a camera, an image of the hair and scalp is obtained in three areas: frontal, temporal and occipital.
The trichologist, by analyzing the images of hair and scalp in the frontal, temporal and occipital locations, will measure the number of hair, convert them into a unit in a specific area, determine the distribution of diameters of measured hair (average values, the percentage of thickness, thinness, medium hair), counts single, double and triple hair units and counts yellow horn plugs/empty hair follicles and assesses the presence of exfoliation (quantitative and qualitative assessment). The measurement is made manually or automatically (using the TrichoLAB system). These data are recognized in the form of a trichoscopic report, which allows the doctor to efficiently analyze data, make a diagnosis, and in subsequent tests compare the acquired parameters.
Trichoscopy allows the differentiation of different types of baldness, especially androgenic with chronic telogen baldness. Trichoscopic examination makes it possible to recognize dystrophic, residual and broken hair. The trichoscopic method allows the assessment of activity of such inflammatory diseases as flat bellows lichen (LPP) or discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE).
