What is sabal palm?

Sabal palm is native to North America and has been held in high regard for many centuries. It was already appreciated by ancient Indian tribes, who used the plant to treat urinary disorders, relieve the effects of painful menstruation. It was not until the 19th century that sabal palm began to be used in Europe. The plant is distinguished by the precious properties of its fruits, which have huge amounts of phytosterols, fatty acids and flavonoids, polysaccharides, amino acids or carbohydrates. The plant reaches a height of up to two meters and a width of one meter. The palm’s plume is stiff, green with green-blue leaves, set on a short stem. The palm has white flowers gathered in panicles. During flowering, they can be spotted above the leaves. The fruits, on the other hand, are small, black and shiny. They resemble aronia in appearance.

In warm climates, the palm grows in the ground – both in the wild and decoratively in the garden. In temperate climates, on the other hand, the palm tree will not overwinter in the ground. During the summer it can be a decoration for terraces or balconies, but for autumn or winter the plant should be tucked indoors or special covers with heating should be used.

What active substances does sabal palm have?

Sabal palm extract has valuable phytosterols in the form of beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, lupenol, campesterol and cyclooxenol. It also contains carbohydrates – including invert sugars, mannitol, starch and high molecular weight polysaccharides (galactose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, rhamnose, glucose and uronic acid derivatives).

Sabal palm fruits also contain flavonoids such as rutin, isoquercitrin, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, apigenin 7-O-ramnoglucoside and anthranilic acid. Sabal palm is also a valuable source of fatty compounds, including lauric, myristic, linoleic or linolenic oils. It has also been shown to contain small amounts of palmitic or capric acid.

Sabal palm for hair, in the form of its fruit extract, has properties that reduce 5-α-reductase activity. This is the enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone into 5-alpha dihydrotestosterone DHT, a hormone that not only enables it to bind to receptors in the nucleus of prostate cells (which in effect increases their growth and cell division), but is also the cause of androgenetic alopecia. Sebaceous glands also have 5-α-reductase, an enzyme that changes testosterone into DHT. Increased levels of this hormone are responsible for hair loss. The hormone causes miniaturization of hair follicles and shortens the life of the hair, disrupting its production. This type of baldness affects not only men, but also women – especially in cases of hormonal imbalance.

Natural sabal palm extract has a beneficial effect on the condition of hair, improving the condition of the skin and inhibiting hair loss.

Why does hair fall out excessively?

Androgenetic alopecia is caused by an ongoing enzymatic reaction process. The reaction converts the male hormone testosterone into its hydrogenated form. It has the ability to damage the hair follicles, and thus the proper regrowth of hair. Thus, in treating this condition, the most effective substances are those that deactivate the enzyme and prevent the process of this transformation.
